November 1999

Haugan and Smith Run Away with Second
Tournament at Liberty

Paul Haugan and Lou Smith were able to accomplish what every other competitor found impossible, locate a decent concentration of quality size fish. In doing so, the team of Haugan and Smith coaxed seven fish to the boat and netted first place in the September 12, 1999 tournament at Liberty Reservoir with a 17.84 pound stringer of fish. Included in that stringer was the largest fish of the event, a 4.53 pound largemouth. Clear water, high skies, a lack of wind and steadily dropping water levels made for a very challenging day of fishing at Liberty Reservoir.

While relatively new to the Metro Reservoir Anglers circuit,  Paul and Lou certainly are not newcomers to the reservoirs. The veteran Liberty Bassmasters members used crankbaits cast over and near large boulder formations in the lower end of the "canyon" area to bring home their first M.R.A.I. victory. And what a convincing victory it was, with almost six pounds separating them from second place. The pair had previously won the Lunker prize at the 7/11/99 tournament at Loch Raven Reservoir.

     The second place team of
Waino Anderson and Ron Wolfe, fishing in close proximity of our champions, brought seven fish to the scales weighing 11.88 pounds. They had won the previous tournament held on this lake on June 27, 1999. The team of Mike Farrell and Paul Koontz finishing third for the second tournament in a row, had one of only two eight fish limits for the day weighing 11.37 pounds.

Fourth place was captured by the only other team that had an eight fish limit,
Larry Bertholdt and George Wilder. Their bag of fish weighed 11.19 pounds and was enough to edge eventual fifth place finishers Tom Brown and Walt Miciche. Tom and Walt weighed seven fish for 10.72 pounds.

As a result of this tournament, the teams of Haugan and Smith,  Bertholdt and Wilder, as well as Brown and Miciche are now eligible for our Tournament of Champions. Anderson and Wolfe and Farrell and Koontz had previously qualified.

We wish to acknowledge our tournament sponsor,
Capitol Cement Company for its' generosity in hosting this event. Trophies for our top three finishers were courtesy of David Kirk, Washington Homes, Inc., and Scorpion Baits, respectively. Exide Batteries, through Beck's Gunsmithing gave away another deep cycle trolling battery and Manufacture Housing Concepts, Inc. was kind enough to provide us with refreshments before and after this event. Also we wish to thank all of our tournament sponsors from this season, through which we gave away four tackle packs valued at thirty dollars to other contestants

Make it four tournaments in a row for
Ray Electric Outboards, Inc., our Season Sponsor. Ray motors have powered the winning boats in all four of our tournaments this season. The first, second, third and fifth place boats in this tournament rely on Ray Electric Outboards to power them into the winners circle!

Barron and Blevins Stake Claim to Loch Raven Title

Sometimes a beautiful fall day can make for some of the years' best fishing. However, that was not the case for this tournament. Light winds and temperatures in the upper seventies proved counterproductive to fishing success as the usually abundant bass of Loch Raven Reservoir again failed to show up for the tournament.

     Still, the team of
John Barron and Tim Blevins made all the right decisions as they were one of only four teams able to squeeze a limit from the Loch. John and Tim brought eight fish to the scales weighing 14.85 pounds and walked away with their first ever Metro Reservoir Anglers, Inc. title.

Barron and Blevins, fishing in their first season as a team,  were able to coax the lethargic largemouth from the deep grass beds adjacent to the Dulaney Valley Road Bridge. Their 3.44 pound largemouth bass was the "kicker" that put them over the top. The victory also makes them eligible for the Tournament of Champions on November 20 and 21 of this year.

Bobby Clark and Ed Naill made their second appearance in the top five this season thanks to their eight fish weighing 13.81 pounds. That was enough to give them a two pound advantage over third place finishers Larry Barger and Bill Wilson. Larry and Bill will also make it to the Tournament of Champions courtesy of their limit of fish weighing 11.82 pounds.

     The pairing of
Larry Bertholdt and George Wilder finished in fourth place for the second consecutive tournament. Their seven fish weighed 10.22 pounds. Scott Erisman and Kim Rutley secured fifth place and a T.O.C. spot by bringing the last                  limit of eight to the scales weighing 10.09 pounds.

The largest fish of the year was brought in by the hottest team of the year.
Bruce Corbin and Rob Corbin only had one bite all day and they still win a prize! Bruce hauled up a 5.33 pound largemouth to claim the Lunker award for the day and knock the 4.53 pounder of Haugan and Smith out of the season lead.

The Metro Reservoir Anglers, Inc. would like to recognize our tournament sponsor,
The Keelty Company, for its' generosity. Also we wish to thank Precision Tune Auto Care for the trophies our first three finishers received. Again, we are especially pleased to thank Exide Batteries for their generous donation of a deep cycle trolling battery that was given away and will be distributed through Beck's Gunsmithing.  Also, we gave away four more tackle packs valued at thirty dollars each courtesy of all of our tournament sponsors. The Finishing Touch was kind enough to join us as our refreshment sponsor once again. Thanks again to the staff of the Loch Raven Fishing Center for accommodating us again.

Not to be forgotten is our
Ray Electric Outboards, Inc. update. Our Season Sponsor will be glad to know that the unbeaten string continues. All five of our tournaments this season have been won by teams with Ray Motors. In addition, the second and fifth place teams for this event also choose Ray Motors as their primary power provider.

Bertazon and Herdegen Take Title at Prettyboy

Rob Bertazon and Larry Herdegen, close in their last attempt at Prettyboy Reservoir, nailed down a victory in the final qualifying tournament of the season. Two months after being edged out by a pound and a half by the team of Corbin and Corbin, Rob and Larry were able to claim their second victory on the Metro Reservoir Anglers trail in as many years. Both of the victories have come at Prettyboy Reservoir.

A limit of eight fish weighing in at 19.46 pounds gave Bertazon and Herdegen better than a two pound cushion over their nearest competitor. Primarily fishing the outside breakline of a mid-lake hump, Larry and Rob used an assortment of crankbaits to secure the victory. "The morning rain and overcast was the key to our success. Once the heavy overcast broke, we stopped catching fish" said Herdegen.

Second place was taken by the team of
John Barron and Tim Blevins with a 16.73 pound limit of fish. John and Tim had just two weeks prior won our event at Loch Raven Reservoir. Third place was taken by another previous winner this season, the team of Ralph Fowble and Glen Fowble. Fishing on the opposite side of the same hump Bertazon and Herdegen fished, Ralph and Glen managed five fish that weighed an impressive 14.04 pounds.

Fourth place was awarded to the team of
Charlie Gardner and Mike Isaac whose five fish weighed 12.56 pounds. Fifth place went to the team of David Kirk and Wes Parrish after catching a limit of eight from the shallow upper reaches of the lake that weighed 11.84 pounds.

With all three of the top finishers already in the Tournament of Champions, the fourth, fifth and sixth place teams secured spots into the fall event. Therefore, the teams of Gardner and Isaac, Kirk and Parrish and
Brad Beach and Mike Gamber will fish for our top prize.

Brad Beach and Mike Gamber make the list with a three fish stringer that weighed an astonishing 10.62 pounds. Among those fish was the largest fish of the season, a 5.44 pound largemouth caught by Mike.

We would like to thank the
Cinder & Concrete Block Corp. for being our tournament sponsor. Modernized Plumbing, Inc. was very generous in donating the trophies for our top three finishers in this tournament. Thank you to our refreshment sponsor, ANM Carpentry who was responsible for our doughnuts and sodas today. Also we would like to thank Exide Batteries, who through Beck's Gunsmithing has generously donated a 12 volt Deep Cycle Battery at every tournament we held this season. Again, we gave away four tackle packs courtesy of all of our tournament sponsors throughout the season.

One very special thank you is due
The City of Baltimore and the Department of Public Works for Baltimore City. Thank you for letting us hold our tournaments on the lakes and especially for the work done on the ramp area at Prettyboy Reservoir, without which we would not have been able to hold this last tournament. The staff of the Department of Public Works should be commended for their professionalism. We also thank them for the support and confidence they have shown in our organization.

     Our deepest gratitude goes to
Ray Electric Outboards, Inc. who has loyally stood behind the reservoir fisherman for years, and has revolutionized the electric outboard motor for the reservoir fishermen. Thirty three of the forty four boats that fished in the Metro Reservoir Anglers circuit in 1999 were propelled by Ray motors. In this last tournament the second, third and fourth place boats were powered by Ray Motors. For the season, Ray motors accounted for five first place finishes. Also Ray motors had four second places, four third places, three forth places and three fifth place finishes.

Board of Directors Ballot and Survey

The 1999 Ballot for the election of Board of Directors will be mailed shortly. There will be three Board positions up for election this year. As we had done last year, a membership survey will be included with the ballot.

The ballot is your opportunity to elect the individuals that will shape the future of this organization. Likewise, the survey gives you a chance to make suggestions of a specific nature, that can directly impact the direction the Board leads the organization.

We ask that each and every member fills out and returns their ballot and survey. The more complete the response, the better we will be able to represent the wishes of the group.

Thanks for a Great Season

The 1999 M.R.A.I. season has proven to be a great success. In our six qualifying tournaments we had two hundred and thirty team entries. That means we averaged over thirty eight boats per event!

Of the forty four teams that made up the M.R.A.I. this season, nineteen different teams won a prize (First through Fifth place and Lunker Awards) from the tournaments. Also, we gave away twenty nine other prizes that were specifically designated for those that did not win a prize on the tournament days. Plus, everyone was able to enjoy the refreshments at each event.

I wish to thank several people in particular for their hard work this past season. John Baker and Bruce Lewin are to be commended for volunteering to be our weigh-masters this season. Thank you both for a job well done!  Also, I wish to thank Ron Wolfe and J.D. Lloyd.  Ron and J.D. have served on the Board of Directors the past two seasons and are stepping down to allow some new faces on the Board. However, both have expressed the willingness to serve us again, should they be needed. Thanks to both of you for your dedication to the members of the M.R.A.I.

The consistent turnout for our events teamed with the generosity of our sponsors are the reason we could enjoy such a good year. I wish to thank all of our members who worked to secure sponsorships, had their own companies sponsor events or personally sponsored the organization.

I ask that each member of the Metro Reservoir Anglers, Inc. works to get one sponsor for next season. By doing so, we would have an even more exciting season next year.

Are You on the World Wide Web?

As we begin to prepare for next season we would like to know exactly how many of our members are active on the internet. When you fill out you survey, in addition to giving us your suggestions and comments, please give us your e-mail address.

We would like to begin sending important information to our members via e-mail. Not only could we deliver the latest results and newsletters directly to you by e-mail, we could also send our ballots, surveys and other data to you and save the cost of postage!

Based upon the recent statistics on the usage of our internet site, www.metroreservoiranglers.com, there is a considerable number of our members that already visit us on the web. Let us know who you are and how we can contact you on the internet!

One additional thought as we prepare for the 2000 season, try to find a picture of you and your fishing partner that we could include in our members section on the internet site. We will have a space for a small biography of both anglers as well as your picture. In this way our visitors will be able to match the faces with the names. Also, it will make it easier for you to get to know new members and vice versa!
