My first time out this year - on liberty on saturday. Lots of boats out..... looked more like a tournament day. Water temp as high as 58 in some back protected areas. Fished deep, otherwise would have had big numbers of fish i think. They are moving up. Regardless, caught new boat record 5 3/4 pound smallmouth. Despite its size (very "tall") it did not have the belly you'd expect. Weighed it, took some pics, and released just fine. Hung around that area. On the next pass around but about 50 yards away from a distance see what i thought was turtle surface. Closer, no its a bloated carp. no, closer i realize its that darn big smallie floating sideways on the top. No! I told my son we have to get that and nurse it back in the livewell - cant lose a monster like that... needs to be caught another day. As we get closer the huge bulge on its side is more apparent. It obviously just snatched some big perch, crappie, something after we just let it go minutes earlier and i guess it was lodged in a real uncomfortable position. As we get close enough, i reach down to grab the (now likely 6 1/4 pound) fish it spooks, jumps and then goes straight down. We hung around in the area for 30 minutes or so to make sure it stayed down.
