As the 2014 MRA tournament season draws to a close, I wanted to take some time to put into writing what I expressed at Sunday’s weigh-in, as well as some other thoughts.
It has been my honor to serve as the club’s president once again. I am grateful for the support and kindness the MRA members have shown. The only reason I stepped back into the leadership position was because of how much I enjoy your company and the great spirit of competition that you bring to each and every event. The members of MRA are in my opinion, what makes our group so special.
That being said, you know I had announced this year would be the end of my time spent running the organization. I truly believe that we have a terrific core of new leaders that will take the club to a greater level of success than ever before. To Walt, Chad, and Holden, I want to thank you for always being there to take care of the work at hand and to look out for the best interests of the club. I also want to acknowledge the willingness of Mike Ahlfeldt and Ralph Davis to join the committee and “really get their feet wet” starting with the 2015 season.
But YOU hold the keys to the ultimate success of the Metro Reservoir Anglers. The club always needs new members to the committee and your participation is welcome. Simply let me or Walt know if you would also be willing to serve on the committee in the coming year(s). New committee members brings new ideas and new energy to the organization.
YOU also are our best recruiters for increasing the membership. Tell people about the club and encourage them to join. The simple fact of the matter is with more members, more spots can be paid and the purses will be bigger. Put the same amount of boats in the MRA as the “other group” and I will tell you that more prize money will be distributed by us at the years end than by them! The MRA consistently pays well in excess of 100% of all entry fees back to its’ members in the form of tournament purses. Plus, MRA offers so many other things to set us apart. Livewell additive for every contestant, trophies, a tackle discount program by a national tackle distributor, as well as a first-class website (not a Facebook page) to distribute news and information and build our fishing community.
I want to recognize the special contributions of some of our members in the 2014 season. Ralph Davis was our season sponsor this year. In just his second season with MRA, Ralph made a very generous donation of money and giveaways to ensure that you could enjoy a great time fishing with the MRA.
Ian Godwin and SFVU continued to offer all MRA members access to a terrific catalogue of fishing tackle and accessories. If you are not taking advantage of it – shame on you!
Mike Atwood and Jessica Weeks made sure we all had cold sodas and water at the conclusion of each tournament this season as our refreshment sponsors. And Don Kosdemba, Dale Davis, and Bobby Standiford stepped-up again as our trophy sponsors like they do each and every year. Perhaps next year, you could join the list???
I extend a special “thank you” for the volunteer efforts of Gary Gangi who takes care of the scoreboard duties at the tournaments and Bobby Standiford for helping haul equipment to and from the tournaments. Your efforts are greatly appreciated and I thank you both so very much.
And let’s not forget Craig Gordon for a spectacular website and the posting of all the results and calculations of all the point standings. He does all this at no cost to the club. In fact, his efforts actually make the club money. Now that’s special!
I hope to have more time to devote to blogging on the website as the fall progresses and my work at MRA concludes. Until then, I hope to see you at the TOC and on the water throughout the rest of this year.
