Congratulations to Craig Gordon and Holden Wolfe for their first-ever MRAI Team Trail tournament victory! Their 8 fish limit weighed 22.04 pounds - nearly 4 pounds heavier than the second place bag weighed-in perennial Loch Raven favorites Gary Gangi and Don Kosdemba.
To say that it was a victory well-earned and full of good karma would be an understatement. Craig's bow-mount motor stopped working at approximately 9:00 a.m. forcing he and Holden to leave their initial fishing area (where they had only caught one fish) and go to a place where they could maneuver with their primary motor. As fortune would have it they caught a fish at a secondary spot, and then another, and another and before you know it they had their limit.
The good karma comes into play because just that morning Craig (MRAI's webmaster) had delivered a check for advertising revenue the club had earned from this website to MRAI's President, Rob Bertazon. Craig donates a lot of time and effort to building and maintaining this website. Not only does he donate all his expertise and time, and absorb the expense of the website, but then he makes it so that the club actually profits from the ads we see on the site. Thanks Craig and it's nice to see that good things happen to good people!
Third place went to the team of Steve Martin and Jason Tison. Even though they only had 7 fish to weigh, they captured third with a total weight of 17.92 pounds.
The tournament lunker was a 5.08 pound largemouth caught by the team Bill Constantine and Matt Elliott. There were no smallmouth caught during this even and therefore, those entries will be carried over to our next tournament at Liberty Reservoir on Sunday, August 18th.
Updates to the Anglers of the Year race and the official results sheet will be posted in a week or so. It is vacation season so things will take a little longer to get done for this tournament. Check back soon for the official results. However, I have done some quick calculations and I believe that the team of Larry Barger and Bill Wilson have taken a three point lead halfway through the season with their 3rd consecutive 5th place finish.
Thanks to Ralph Davis for donating some t-shirts and lanyards that were distributed to the early-bird registrants for this tournament. Also, thanks to SFVU for the spectacular tackle discount program offered to MRAI members. If you haven't signed-up yet, you still can. Simply post a comment to this blog and I will be in touch. MRAI members even got a very special extra 10% discount off of their purchases last week! I know I loaded up with a lot of stuff- even though the fish didn't load up on my offerings yesterday!!!
Thank you to all the anglers. You did a great job taking care of your fish in this tournament! There was only one dead fish penalty (by the way the scoreboard picture indicates an incorrect official weight for that team but I have already corrected it for the official results and points) out of 122 fish brought to the scales. Further, thanks to everyone for taking their fish away from the boat dock area and releasing the fish in deeper, open water, and thus giving the fish a better chance for continued survival.
I look forward to seeing all of you at our next tournament.
